Dental Implants Keep Your Smile Whole

When tooth loss happens, dental implants may be the answer.

While teeth are supposed to last forever, problems can arise that can leave you dealing with gaps in your smile. Luckily, tooth loss doesn’t have to be forever for our Long Beach, CA, dentist Dr. Joseph DuRoss offers a long-term solution such as dental implants. Wondering if dental implants are right for you? Here’s how they work.

We Examine Your Smile

Before we can even start the implant process, we need to know that you are healthy enough for implants. This involves talking over the procedure with our Long Beach, CA, dentist. If you are interested, we refer you to the periodontist or oral surgeon to place the implant.

Healing and Osseointegration

Once the implant is placed, we will need to give the implant time to fuse together (known as osseointegration) with bone and tissue within the mouth. This can take anywhere from 3-6 months for the fusion to be complete. Once the implant and jawbone have fused together it’s time to start on the next step in your treatment process.

Placing the Abutment

Then after the healing process, you come into our office where usually another surgery is not needed. We simply remove the screw that is embedded in the implant, place an impression coping and take an impression. Then Dr. DuRoss removes the impression coping and replaces the screw. The lab then constructs the abutment and the crown at the same time. You return to us and we make the patient an appointment.

At this appointment, we remove the screw again, but this time we place the abutment into the implant and tighten the screw to the correct torque. Then the crown is placed on to the abutment and cemented. Anesthesia is not needed when we do our portion of the implant procedure.
