Pain Free Dental Appointments
Would you like your dental appointment to be pain free or, at least, as painless as possible?
Research shows that when vibration is simultaneously applied as a counter stimulation to an anesthetic injection, its sensation reaches the brain first, blocking the feeling of pain.
Proposed by researchers in 1965, there is a neurological "gate" located within the spinal cord that can either block pain signals or permit them to travel up the spinal tract to the brain.
The sensation (impulses) of vibration travels very quickly up thick myelinated nerve fibers at 75 meters/second. In contrast, the sensation of pain travels more slowly along thin unmylenated nerves at 2 meters/second.
When occuring at the same time, the sensation of vibration reaches the sensory area of the brain first and also causes a release of inhibitory interneurons, preventing the activation of projection neurons resulting in a closure of the gate to the sensation of pain.
We now have a device called the DentalVibe. The DentalVibe is a patented award-winnig multipurpose clinical instrument designed to alleviate intra-oral injection pain. It is a cordless hand held device that delivers soothing, pulsed, percussive micro-oscillations to the site where an injection is being administered. Its proprietary VibraPulse technology gently stimulates the sensory receptors at the injection site, effectively closing the neural pain gate, blocking the pain of injections.
This revolutionary instrument enables a Dentist or Hygienist to comfortably anesthetize patients faster and with a more profound effect.
In our office we use topical anesthetic, nitrous oxide and now DentalVibe. We are always trying to eliminate dental pain to make your appointment as comfortable as possible.
