When tooth loss happens, dental implants may be the answer.

While teeth are supposed to last forever, problems can arise that can leave you dealing with gaps in your smile. Luckily, tooth loss doesn’t have to be forever for our Long Beach, CA, dentist Dr. Joseph DuRoss offers a long-term solution such as dental implants. Wondering if dental implants are right for you? Here’s how they work.

We Examine Your Smile

Before we can even start the implant process, we need to know that you are healthy enough for implants. This involves talking over the procedure with our Long Beach, CA, dentist. If you are interested, we refer you to the periodontist or oral surgeon to place the implant.

Healing and Osseointegration

Once the implant is placed, we will need to give the implant time to fuse together (known as osseointegration) with bone and tissue within the mouth. This can take anywhere from 3-6 months for the fusion to be complete. Once the implant and jawbone have fused together it’s time to start on the next step in your treatment process.

Placing the Abutment

Then after the healing process, you come into our office where usually another surgery is not needed. We simply remove the screw that is embedded in the implant, place an impression coping and take an impression. Then Dr. DuRoss removes the impression coping and replaces the screw. The lab then constructs the abutment and the crown at the same time. You return to us and we make the patient an appointment.

At this appointment, we remove the screw again, but this time we place the abutment into the implant and tighten the screw to the correct torque. Then the crown is placed on to the abutment and cemented. Anesthesia is not needed when we do our portion of the implant procedure.

If you are looking for a dentist in Long Beach, CA, that can provide you with dental implants then call Dr. DuRoss’ office at (562) 424-8537 today.

There are several restorative procedures that can help rejuvenate and strengthen your smile, but dental implants are the best. If you'redental imlants interested in a natural-felling and stable tooth replacement, Dr. Joseph DuRoss can provide you with dental implants from his Long Beach, CA, office.

Dental implants are one of many restorative procedures, like dentures and bridges, and consist of several parts:

  • A titanium post inserted into the jawbone
  • A screw that secures an abutment
  • A crown matching the rest of your teeth

They have several advantages, including restoring full biting and chewing function, lasting a lifetime, and filling gaps to give you a wider, fuller smile. They mimic the look and feel of natural teeth, are biocompatible, and have a 95 percent success rate.

Your Long Beach dentist surgically inserts a titanium post into your jaws to replace your missing tooth root. This piece provides stability and strength while preventing any weakening or shrinkage of the jawbone. After inserting the titanium post, the dentist seals your gums and allows 3 to 6 months for osseointegration to occur. Following this period, your dentist re-opens the area above the titanium post, inserts a screw, places an abutment above the screw and secures a crown on top that matches the rest of your teeth.

Caring for Dental Implants

You need to take proper care of your dental implants. Some preventative measures include brushing your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day while holding the brush at a 40-degree angle, daily flossing as well as avoiding tobacco and drinking too much coffee and/or tea.

Professional dental cleanings and checkups every six months to remove hardened plaque are also essential.

Missing teeth can cause more than just aesthetic issues. Unfortunately, if left untreated, a single missing tooth can cause numerous side dental implantseffects. Luckily, your dentist can replace your missing tooth to fill in your gaps and ensure that your smile is in its healthiest and most beautiful form with dental implants. Find out more about dental implants and what they can do for your teeth with Dr. Joseph DuRoss in Long Beach, CA.

What are dental implants?
Understanding dental implants is easiest if you understand the parts of a dental implant. The implant consists of three main components: the fixture, the abutment, and the prosthetic. The fixture is implanted directly into the jawbone under the missing tooth and remains there permanently. The bone grows around the fixture to lock it into place and replace the missing tooth’s root. The prosthetic replaces the tooth, fitting over the abutment, which connects the prosthetic to the fixture. Depending on the type of implant your dentist uses, the abutment may be fixed onto the fixture or a separate piece.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?
There are a few prerequisites for those considering dental implants. Good candidates should have a strong at-home oral care routine to keep their natural teeth and implants free from teeth decay and gum disease. The candidate should also have minimal bone atrophy in the area of the implant to ensure that the fixture can adequately integrate into the bone. Patients who do not have a good bone volume may require a bone grafting procedure prior to their implant procedure.

There’s good news! If you have gaps in your smile, there are many dental treatment options for you. With the help of our Long Beach, dental implantsCA dentist, Dr. Joseph DuRoss, dental implants can help you restore both the appearance and function of your teeth, no matter your age.

What are Long Beach Dental Implants?

For dental implants to be the most successful, a patient must have the proper bone structure and a strong immune system to heal properly. Dental implants in Long Beach do in fact require a strict oral hygiene. Without it your dental implants will be susceptible to infection.

Dental implants are structures that are placed in the gap area normally occupied by a tooth. Since implants are meant to replace the root, they are anchored directly to the jawbone with a screw. From there, they become the foundation for the implant.

The Dental Implant Process

When it comes to dental implants, oral surgery is necessary in order to prepare the area properly and for the best chance of success overall. After the implant is implanted into the mouth, a period of time is required for it to take hold in the mouth and for bone tissue to build up and heal properly. This allows for the most successful outcome.

In some instances, metal posts are inserted into the implant during a follow-up procedure to connect the tooth successfully. This is done on a case-by-case basis. Anesthesia is required for this procedure as well as antibiotics in order to prevent infection from occurring both during and after this surgical procedure.

Whatever type of dental procedure you are looking for, the help of our professional Long Beach, CA dentist, Dr. DuRoss, is essential. He is ready and willing to treat you so that you can have the teeth you’ve already dreamt of.
