Find out why you should be getting screened by our Long Beach general dentist at least once a year.
Oral cancer may not be discussed as much as other forms of cancer but it can be just as serious and life threatening. Unfortunately, most people don’t turn to our Long Beach, CA dentist, Dr. Joseph DuRoss, as often as they should, which means that most people don’t detect issues until it is too late. Find out why oral cancer screenings are extremely important and what they entail.
Why are oral cancer screenings necessary for everyone?
It probably goes without saying but oral cancer screenings are important for everyone because oral cancer can be treated effectively and successfully if caught in its early stages. When you come in to see our Long Beach general dentist for an oral cancer screening you don’t have to make a separate appointment to get one.
The next time you schedule your biannual cleaning we will often perform a routine screening while you are already in the chair. The screening is painless and only takes a couple of minutes. By examining your mouth and feeling the tissue for any lumps or abnormal changes we can detect problems right away and send a sample to a lab to have it properly tested.
Are you at risk for oral cancer?
While oral cancer can happen to anyone, there are certain factors that will put some people more at risk for developing this form of cancer than others. Common risk factors include:
- Those over the age of 40
- Those who smoke or use tobacco products
- Heavy alcohol consumption
- Those diagnosed with HPV infection
- Your gender (more men than women develop oral cancer)
- A diet that is lacking in proper nutrients
- Prolonged exposure to the sun (whether for work, etc.)
While many people who have oral cancer have at least one risk factor, it’s become increasingly common to see patients diagnosed with oral cancer who haven't had a single risk factor. So to play it safe you should always come into our office for routine cleanings, exams and screenings to make sure that both your smile and your general health remain at their best.
Do you need to schedule your next dental visit? Are you concerned that certain factors could predispose you to oral cancer? If so, call our Long Beach, CA dental office right away and let us know if you are interested in getting an oral cancer screening.
