Family and General Dentistry
Long Beach, California
Dr. DuRoss is a family dentist and general dentist, but he is much more than that. He is a cosmetic dentist, and one that enhances all the work he does. A cosmetic dentist approaches general dentistry from a larger perspective, and has skills and knowledge that will enhance your smile while providing dental restoration and repair.
Dental Care for Children
When you have children it can be a great benefit to have a dental office where the whole family can be treated. We are such an office. It is important that children learn good dental hygiene habits early in life, and we can help you teach your young ones how to care for their teeth effectively. Children are some of our favorite patients.
General Dentistry Restorations
If you or your child needs a filling, Dr. DuRoss will do a white filling rather than a metal amalgam filling. White fillings do not inflict the gradual damage of metal fillings. Instead of weakening a tooth, a white filling will strengthen it and prolong its life. It will also blend in with the color of the natural teeth and be invisible as a filling.
Metal amalgam fillings contain mercury and have been implicated in several medical problems. Dr. DuRoss has not used this type of filling for the last ten years.
If you or a family member need a dental bridge, we can take care of that in two easy visits. When teeth are missing it is important to fill the gaps as soon as possible, to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting. When teeth get out of good alignment, your bite is affected and problems can increase.
Regular Check-ups and Cleaning
Part of excellent dental care is coming for regular check-ups so that Dr. DuRoss can detect cavities at an early stage. Then they are simpler to fill and more of your tooth can be preserved. He uses the DIAGNOdent probe to detect decay before it can be seen by the naked eye or in an X-ray. We use digital X-rays because they immediately provide images that we can display and discuss with you, and also because they expose you to far less radiation than traditional X-rays.
When the teeth are not brushed and flossed adequately, bacteria and their acid excretions (known as plaque) will build up. Anything acidic destroys tooth enamel. When plaque is left long enough on the teeth it becomes hard tartar, also called calculus. That cannot be brushed away, but Chris, our hygienist, can remove it with dental implements, and give you a fresh start with your daily dental care.
Gum Disease and General Health
It has been known for some time that people with diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease. More recently, it has been found that the reverse can also happen -- If gum disease is allowed to develop and become chronic, it can lead to diabetes. Studies have also shown that gum disease contributes to heart disease and to low birth rates. By maintaining healthy gums, you can also keep your entire body more healthy.
